Word and Mouth
by Sue H

When you first arrive in Cyprus, your days consist of seeing as many of the attractions and sights that the island has to offer as well as the normal day to day living. Some days are better than others. We can all buy a guide book and visit the Kourian Theatre or the Tomb of the Kings but, what about the little gems that you come across while travelling around the island or a friend mentions to you about the place they went to for thingamajigs birthday. As far as the day to day living is concerned, I don’t think you ever stop learning or finding new approaches. These little gems are usually passed on by word and mouth. Please help us all and pass your own suggestions or personal thoughts so others can benefit from you wisdom and experiences like:-.

Places to eat

The Last Castle (Vikla) – It is a long way to go from Limassol but worth every Kilometre. The Taverna is on the Akamas coast on the western side of Cyprus. Once you have made your way up the track you will be rewarded by the spectacular views and the unpretentious, but extremely good, food. The chicken and pork is barbequed to perfection. The chips are huge and certain home made and the salads are as good as you will get anywhere else. It is a little like eating with Fred Flintstone on the stone tables with lumps of meat but, for meat lovers, it is one not to be missed.

Directions: - Head west (out of Paphos, passed Coral Bay) to Agios Georgios. Just

before this road ends you will see a right hand turn to the Akamas. (Taverna on the right hand corner). This tarmac road soon becomes a well-trodden track. Follow this track for approximately one kilometre through the
U bend and you will see a right hand turn. Turn right and keep going up to the very top.

Maria’s Taverna at Vavatsinia - It is only 15 minutes further on up the road past the village of Lefkara. Just before the village, on the right hand side, is Maria’s Taverna. In the warmer months you can sit out side and enjoy the scenery and listen to the silence. The food is good value traditional delicious Cypriot style, and you will get free desert (usually ladies fingers) which are wonderful. Certainly worth the ride for the good value food and the scenery.

Directions: -   Head out of Limassol towards Larnaca. Take the Lefkara/Vavatsinia turning. Keep heading up for another 15 minutes passed Lefkara and you will be come to the village (Maria’s a little before the main village on your right).
